A community · A resource centre · A hangout

The nest is empty. Your life doesn't have to be.

Welcome to Empty Nester Tribe: a community, a resource centre and a hangout for parents whose children have grown up and flown. The house is quieter. The routines have changed. And somewhere between pride and “now what?” a lot of us are asking the same question: Who am I now?

01 The conversation

This is where that conversation happens.

We talk honestly about what nobody warned us about: the silence, the shifting marriage, the identity that was wrapped up in parenting. And we explore what comes next: rediscovering old passions, building friendships, staying healthy, finding new purpose, parenting adult children, and bringing a little zing back into everyday life.

Everyone is welcome

Newly emptied, years in or still bracing for it; married, single, divorced or widowed.

03 The book

Empty Nest is not Emptiness

Restarting life in your 50s.

By Thommen Jose

A nest is meant to become empty; that is its purpose. The real tragedy is letting an empty nest turn into an empty life.

This book is not about surviving the empty nest. It is about outgrowing it.

Written from hundreds of conversations with parents, it moves from the emotional shock of the quiet house to designing the most intentional stage of your life.

What's inside

  1. The Shock of the Suddenly Empty Nest
  2. Who Am I When I'm Not Somebody's Parent?
  3. Reimagining Relationships
  4. The Gift of Time
  5. Experience as Asset: Second Careers, New Purpose and the AI Opportunity
  6. Letting Go Without Letting Go
  7. Not Just Lifespan, but Healthspan
  8. Designing Your Next Life
  9. The Zing Factor
  10. Lot More Life Ahead: Now Live It!

Every chapter ends with reflection exercises and closing thoughts. It is deliberately a quick read, so you can start your next chapter without wasting any more time.

For you if your nest has just emptied, you're bracing for it, your marriage is changing, you're single again, or retirement is on the horizon.

04 About the author

Thommen Jose

Thommen Jose is a writer, storyteller, filmmaker and communication professional whose career has run from journalism and advertising to corporate communications, aviation and, most importantly, the open road.

With a degree in Economics and a postgraduate degree in Communication and Journalism, he began as a sub-editor at The Week, then became a copywriter and creative director with national agencies. He went on to make films and communication campaigns for corporates and development initiatives, and discovered that the best stories are about people.

Travel found its home in Wanderink.com, his long-running blog, once recognised among India's top responsible-travel blogs. His writing and photography have appeared in The Hindu, Deccan Chronicle and The New Indian Express. Two road-trip guidebooks followed, both from the Times of India Group: Experience Agra and around on the road and Experience Chhattisgarh on the road.

Farming is more than a hobby: he recently built Farmfrnd.in, an app that lets farmers sell directly and barter their produce.

This book grew out of his own circle, with sisters, classmates and friends becoming empty nesters one by one. His belief is the same one that shaped his road trips: getting older is no excuse for becoming boring, and life gets interesting precisely when the map runs out.
